A few things to update on…
October 18th peer-support recap:
Facilitator: Kathy Bolton
The meeting started at 1:00 p.m. Members that had been away talked about their trips. Some of the tips about travel and living well with cancer: Train travel was great, easy pace, not too physically demanding, able to take in the scenery from a comfortable seat, meals of the size you want when you wanted them available, etc. One member stated that she felt more at ease travelling in Canada because of not having to worry about international medical issues, and the ease of getting home should a medical emergency come up. Talking with oncologist about upcoming trips to fit in appointments, treatments, scans etc within dates, so travel can happen was talked about and members gave examples of when it had worked for them. Some members talked about keeping as germ free as possible: in hospitals, ferries, airport public washrooms, public theatres, etc; using hand sanitizer, not touching elevator buttons with hands, using face masks, etc.
Members used the second hour of the meeting to talk about where they are in their journey. A theme of lightening up letting things go, acknowledging that sometimes longstanding friendships sometimes are no longer a good fit because of physical differences (energy levels, belief systems). The group brain stormed about what to do when well meaning friends urge you to do more than what you are physically capable of or (more than what the doctor has given permission for). Remembering to be true to yourself, taking good care of yourself is also living your life as fully as possible without over extending your energy. Members were reminded about the closing date for the survey and look forward to hearing about the results.
An update from Ashley:
Thanks to everyone who participated in the survey. We had a fairly good amount of people respond which is awesome. Once it is reviewed by the Board I will publish an overview of everything to share with everyone via email update and will also make a print out available for Kathy Bolton to share at an upcoming group session… date to be announced.
Hope that some of you were able to connect with Inspire Health for their most recent LIFE webinar that started recently. If anyone would like more info on this they can get on Inspire Health's newsletter list here: http://www.inspirehealth.ca (scroll to the bottom - submit email at the bottom left hand side of their website under "get connected")
Also, Cancer Chat Canada has some groups starting up again soon which might be useful for people who have a hard time making it to the support group in person. There are also groups available for caregivers and support people as well. You can check out the upcoming groups at the website below… and you may register through their website as well. https://cancerchatcanada.ca/news.php?id=23
Hope everyone is staying cozy as the weather starts to get a little bit chillier.
