The meeting started off with a buzz about the survey sent out on behalf of the Ruby Slipper Fund Board. All members who attended today’s meeting had already filled out the survey. Some members mentioned some glitches with “Survey Monkey type software”, but most found it straight forward. (All glitches should be fixed at this time!) The group mentioned that they would like to hear about the results, when the survey is over. Sometime in November an overview of the results will be shared. One of our members recounted an incident of poor treatment from the staff of St. Mary’s. The person that was treated with little respect, sent a letter to the administrator of St. Mary’s and an apology from the staff person was received. Way to go, Warrior!
A reminder to those newly diagnosed with Cancer: Chemotherapy drugs that are provided at St. Mary’s, Lions Gate Hospital, Cancer Agency etc are provided at no cost and paid for by the Cancer society. You can get chemotherapy drugs through a regular pharmacy, but they are usually very costly and not covered there. Talk to your oncologist or doctor who is prescribing the drugs to you if you are confused about where to pick up medications and discuss with them what is and is not covered.
Some brainstorming was done around when and how to ask to see a specialist, ie. dermatologist, gastroenterologist, hematologist etc. What the discussion boiled down to was, when things were tried and if you didn’t get results, a discussion with a GP or oncologist could go something like: "is there anything else we could try in this situation, Is there anyone you can suggest that might know about this (condition) or how to alleviate it?" Ask for a referral to someone who CAN help.
A member reported about a great massage, set of exercises and thorough assessment from a Physiotherapist in Gibsons at Gibsons Motion Massage 604 886 3699. The member said that the physio, knew about lymphatic drainage and conditions that sometimes arise after treatment. The 90 minute session was $90.
Kathy is preparing a folding file folder, to hold paperwork like: Quick tips for advanced care plans, up to date telephone list of Cancer Thrivers, application for support from the Ruby Slipper, etc. The Plastic folder will be Labeled Ruby Slipper Cancer Thrivers, on the table in the corner of the room at the Community Resource Centre.
A few laughs, and some summer catch up about holidays and families rounded out the meeting.
