Here is a recap from our peer support sessions in June.
June 7 session:
Facilitator: Kathy Bolton
Guest Speaker: Patrina Wing, Coast Health
The meeting started off with Patrina Wing, speaking about the Advance Care Plan document and workbook. She briefly talked about chapters of the workbook that would be useful to the group, answered questions, explained meanings of specific items, etc. Patrina also gave a workbook to each member to work through. A quick tips worksheet was left with Kathy to photocopy for members that want them. (Email us if you would like these) The group decided that in a month’s time they would bring the workbook and work together on it for 1 hour of meeting time. The group will work on the plan for themselves from time to time as a group and be a support. Patrina had suggested that Betty the social worker at Coastal Health may be available in the future for support in working through the document. To be put in touch with them send us an email and we can get you in touch.
June 27 session:
Facilitator: Kathy Bolton
The meeting started with a welcome to a new member and a check-in with members around the table. Kathy said a few words about two members that passed away recently. Another group member mentioned that two additional obituaries in the local paper were about people who passed away with cancer (but were not in the support group). One of the group members asked that we spend the rest of the meeting in discussion on the topic “How to deal with people dying of cancer that we know or hear about”.
Some of the suggestions were:

Some of the suggestions were:
- Give yourself a specific time to grieve or “feel sorry for yourself" and then pick yourself up again.
- Look at what you have, rather than what is already gone.
- Recognize that there are exceptions to every rule and you might be one of them.
- Even if you are only give a 10% chance of survival, someone will be that 10% and it could be you turn
- Have faith and take comfort in faith.
- Talk to someone who is a good listener or who understands.
